Stewart began his playing career with the Lions Junior Brass on Soprano Cornet and later went on to play with various bands and orchestras in South Cheshire and North Staffordshire, moving onto cornet and trumpet. Highlights include visiting the USA with the Cheshire Youth Brass Band and performing at the United Nations Building in the pouring Rain and on Coast to Coast television, as well as qualifying for the National Brass Band Finals with the City of Stoke on Trent Brass before playing in the Championship Section for a number of years.

Educated at Manchester Metropolitan University with a degree in Contemporary Arts with composition and conducting as his specialities, Stewart has focused the most recent part of his musical life on teaching and conducting. He works as an instrumental teacher for the City Music and Performing Arts Service and is the Principal Brass Advisor and Area Secretary for Victoria College of Music.
As a conductor he has worked with a variety of groups and choirs, having been Deputy Bandmaster to Cheshire Constabulary and Musical Director of Rode Hall Silver Band. He has been Musical Director of the Nantwich and District Band, a 40 piece symphonic band since 2002 with considerable success.
He is married to fellow musician and teacher Anna who he met at University and they live in Crewe, Cheshire
